Curriculum

Through the curriculum, leaders introduce pupils to ‘the best that has been thought and said’. - Ofsted 2021

Our curriculum provides the space to immerse ourselves in life-shaping and life-changing learning and experiences. Learning from their context and starting point our students develop into dynamic thinkers, able to learn, unlearn and relearn. Our whole school curriculum is future minded. It develops through learning from and with others in school and beyond. It is relevant to and resonates with all of our students, so that they are ready for whatever they want to be in the world.

Our curriculum is designed to prepare our young people with knowledge, understanding and skills to succeed in the world, and be ready to take a leading role in their communities. Through every lived experience we provide our young people with the challenge, skills and attributes to have the personal and intellectual ability to thrive.

The curriculum is well-structured and implemented. - Ofsted 2021

Our curriculum is mapped so that it builds upon prior learning and provides challenge beyond the National Curriculum and specifications. This occurs through subject lessons and in a weekly Discover+ subject mastery electives. Support is provided at key transition points to enable progress.

Our curriculum prepares students for the next stage of their lives. Students build a love of learning and the foundations to excel at GCSE at Key Stage 3, and then undertake a personalised pathway at A Level. They secure places at the very best universities, aspirational apprenticeship programmes and pursue wide-ranging careers. Through subject mastery and enrichment opportunities our students develop character and scholarly prowess – they make a positive impact in the world around them.

The way in which the curriculum celebrates diversity is a striking feature. - Ofsted 2021

Our community celebrates its diversity. We are culturally diverse and seek to represent the voices and experiences of our people.

Universal Provision

Our curriculum is planned with inclusive access in mind. We apply the principle ‘Valuable for all, vital for some’ when planning sequences of learning. Because we know that in particular students with special educational needs benefit from teaching that incorporates practice such as clear and precise instructions, chunking information, regular and spaced retrieval, these are planned in as standard. Individual needs beyond this are also incorporated into lesson planning.

I settled into life at Denmark Road really quickly and feel like I have been here longer than i really have. I love coming here each day. There are many things I love about Denmark Road but one thing I particularly love is the amount of sport that takes place here. I attend a lot of clubs including football, netball, flag football and hockey. These clubs don’t just help me develop skills, they also help me make some more friends. Every teacher makes each lesson very enjoyable. I leave lessons with a big smile and I can feel my development and progress in all subjects. My favourite subjects are Spanish, Food and Nutrition, English, Art and Drama. I am loving coming to sc

Denmark Road has been my home since Year 7, and since continuing my studies in Sixth Form, I have been able to study the subjects I enjoy the most, with amazing teachers. I am taking Computing, Physics, Maths, and the Engineering EPQ, and I have to say that I have enjoyed completing my EPQ the most so far. Meeting other people who share your passion for your subject here is a wonderful experience, and being able to use our engineering knowledge in the EDT Industrial Cadets Award has been so fulfilling. The trips to Mira Showers, the company we have been working with, and the University of Bath were really inspiring. The skills I have gained throughout the year will definitely help me to a

The best thing about Denmark Road is the sense of family felt by peers and teachers. We are a community who support each other to be ourselves and I love the freedom we have to express your own individuality.  I particularly enjoy being part of the musical communities here. I am a part of Jazz Band, Orchestra and multiple Choirs. You really get to know everybody and get to have fun rehearsing and putting on regular performances. Olympiads in Maths and Biology have been great experiences too. I've also taken opportunities to explore other interests such as engineering through the Greenpower club and STAAR Challenge. With the Greenpower team we built, tested an

Joining Denmark Road High School Sixth Form has allowed me to grow, not only academically but as a whole person. This is through the welcoming and diverse community of the school, including students and teachers who have supported me and others through all situations. As a student who joined the school in Year 12, I found it easy to adjust to the new environment due to the wide selection of opportunities ranging from The Edge Programme to House Events, allowing me to be part of the school community, and gaining a voice. I am currently studying English Literature, Sociology and Psychology, with aspirations to join the Navy as an officer in the future. Denmark Road High School Sixth

I love Denmark Road because it is such an encouraging and supportive place to go to school.  Although I have only been here for a month, I feel like I have been here for years.  I feel that I have settled in so well and made loads of friends. Something I love to do is sports. In primary school, there weren’t many opportunities but now I’m here there is so much more to do. I have been introduced to many other things I love to do, such as science practicals, and more art lessons. The teachers here are so amazing and helpful. They make our lessons fun and interactive, keeping me engaged and ready to learn.  My favourite lessons are science, art, foo

Denmark Road supported my academic and personal development since year 7 to align with and facilitate my future aspirations. I studied A-Levels in Economics, Maths, and Biology and am now studying Land Economy at Cambridge. What stands out to me is the sense of community that develops within the year groups and between students and staff. This has always provided an encouraging learning environment where peer support is a fundamental part of our studies, super-curricular exploration, and applications. Personally, the opportunities provided from the start of year 7 to build confidence and communication skills through group proj

I’ve been at Denmark road for a couple of years, but I settled in so quickly, I feel like I have been here for so much longer. With all the opportunities available academically but also in sport, drama, music and art it is impossible not to love being here. I love the fact that there are amazing trips we can go on such as Netball PGLs, theatre trips, ski trips and a sport tour to Barbados. A passion of mine is sport. I play competitive hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, cross country and rounders for school. I have been delighted at the amount of sport on offer and I enjoy having the opportunity to sometimes captain a team which has helped me to develop my lea

Having spent seven years at Denmark Road High School I have so many fond memories, particularly as being in the Sixth Form has brought more independence and opportunities. I have especially loved taking part in House events such as House Dance as there is a great team bond across the year groups and a fun, competitive atmosphere plus they offer a chance to go off timetable and show our skills in other areas. I have loved my time at this school and would not change any of it as it has helped shape me into who I am today. I recently completed five A Levels; Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. As there wasn’t enough space on my timetable for everythi

I’m Nell and I’m on the netball team, football team and do tennis, badminton and rounders clubs. In the future I’d like to be a frontlines journalist. I love that my year group is full of likeminded peers like me that also love to learn. We can take every opportunity to learn new things and go new places in a safe environment. I’ve had opportunities to see plays, visit castles, museums, beaches and much more. One of the best weeks of my life was a week long geography trip to Iceland and a week in Newquay! Our invest days are also amazing opportunities to learn and discover things off timetable, an example is our drugs awareness day which has stuck with me f

There’s a great feeling of togetherness at our school, I’ve made really great friends – even in other year groups - and love the opportunities we get as students. I know I can always offer an answer and not be afraid to get something wrong because if I do, it’s not a problem and it’s just a great chance to learn. I’m part of the Orchestra and do seasonal clubs like badminton, tennis and volleyball. I’ve also been able to go to Austria on a trip, to a talk in Bristol on Maths and I’m part of the Step Up programme preparing me for Oxbridge in the future if I choose to go down that route.

Some of my favourite things I get to do at Denmark Road are the creative productions and clubs. The year before last I had a part in Legally Blonde: The Musical Jnr and really enjoyed getting to be involved in such a fun, exciting project. I made friends in other year groups who had the same interests as me and putting on shows for sold out audiences night after night was a great experience. Last year we performed A Monster Calls and I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially as it is a darker production than the pink comedy of Legally Blonde. I’d love to take the skills I am learning now forward to becoming a News Presenter in the future. I think the fact Denmark Road is

The best thing about being at Denmark Road High School is actually three things; the teachers, the teaching assistants and the students. I have been inspired to be a teacher when I grow - if I’m not playing Water Polo for Great Britain! I love the opportunities I get here such as House Music and House Drama, being able to take up a new instrument, play in sports matches and meet new people, as well as the wide variety of clubs to try. Something I feel confident in now is that you don’t need to rush friendships. Those people who are naturally more confident will talk to those who are less confident and everything falls naturally into place.
