Learning at Denmark Road

Pupils work hard, strive for and achieve success. In lessons, it is typical to see pupils deeply engaged in scholarly discussion. - Ofsted 2021

Denmark Road High School learning is ambitious, evidence-informed, active, collaborative, progressive.

We know from the research of Piaget, Dewey and Vygotsky that learning happens best when students are actively engaged in the process. Students, guided by teachers, tackle tasks slightly beyond their current abilities, this helps students internalise new knowledge and skills, promoting cognitive growth.

We are proponents of The Socratic method in education. In an ever-changing world where search engines and AI provide facts, knowledge and information, the skills that will be most valuable as we prepare students for their future are skills such as critical thinking, synthesis, analysis, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

To develop active learning through the Socratic method, at DRHS we have three key areas of focus for developing teaching and learning. These are:

  • Questioning
  • Mass participation – Through oracy and use of mini whiteboards
  • Effective use of technology

Teaching and Learning at Denmark Road High School

Pupils learn about the importance of achieving a balance between study and leisure activity. - Ofsted 2021

Our role as educators is to work with students and their parents to prepare them for the place they wish to make for themselves in the world. Learning at Denmark Road therefore has balance at it’s heart. We understand and the importance of looking after ourselves in order to be the person we want to be in the world and to be there for others. We achieve this through our pastoral curriculum and our extensive range of enrichment opportunities.

Pupils, including students in the sixth form, participate in an extensive range of sporting, creative, technical, cultural and spiritual pursuits. - Ofsted 2021
