There is no subject that is more relevant to student’s lives than Sociology. At Denmark Road we encourage students to share and apply their relevant life experiences but also to nurture a ‘sociological imagination,’ stimulating curiosity and enabling students to step outside of their own experiences and see the world through different lenses. It is our aim to take students on a journey of gaining deeper insights into the world by exploring the nature of and complex relationships between individuals, groups and institutions.
Whilst we appreciate the importance of exam results in reflecting achievement, we also place tremendous value on the power of this subject to support each student’s personal development. Through lessons students are encouraged to become independent thinkers, challenging preconceptions and enabling them to critically assess the reasons for different experiences and social inequalities. Students are prompted to develop their empathy skills and identify their own personal values which underpin their responses to social issues. Knowledge and understanding are never seen as an end in themselves but always as means to formulating informed views and identifying what is required to bring about positive social change.
