Mrs Sawicka was appointed as Headteacher in April 2006, but because of having to give a whole term’s notice in her current job could not take up her headship until January 2007.  Between September – December 2006, Mr Willis was Acting Headteacher (Deputy Head under Mrs Bainbridge).


In January, Mrs Sawicka took up her post.




In September we celebrated the successes of our students at Prize-giving which was a wonderful occasion, made even more momentous by our speaker Mr Rob Rees, the Cotswold Chef, and by Elin White’s outstanding violin solo.
It is with great sadness, however, that I wish to inform you that one of our former Year 13 students,

Over the summer holidays there was the customary hectic activity around the site when the maintenance team undertook several projects. It amazed me how quickly and efficiently they worked on redecorating the stairwells in the main building. This was a huge job, but it has significantly improved how the main building looks. The Art department has been particularly helpful in replacing all the old art work with current students’ work. We have also replaced the flooring in the back stairwell of the Humanities block and replaced the roof over the Design and Technology room. Over
the October break we are planning to put in security doors to the dining hall, the back of the Humanities block and also to the Science area. This is the first phase of making the site more secure as we are most conscious of the fact that we have a very open site.

At the start of the term we welcomed a number of new colleagues: Mr Bush, as Curriculum Director for Mathematics, Psychology and Business, Mr Colvin to teach Biology, Miss Pearcey and Ms Camp to teach English, Miss Bennett to teach Art Textiles, Mrs Wynn-Williams who joined the Food Technology Department and Mrs Biles the PE department.

The first term has included many events which have taken place in School. The Welcome/Information evenings for Years 10, 11 and 12 were very well received by both students, parents/carers alike. We held a Freshers’ Fair on 17 September, advertising all the extra-curricular activities offered in School.

The variety of clubs and activities offered means that there is something for everyone to do. A whole school photograph was taken at the end of September.  It is an awe-inspiring experience when one sees the whole school in front of one’s eyes in a confined space. The Open Days at School were a great success as our students are such wonderful ambassadors for the High School. Thank you to all the parents/carers who made this possible.  The French exchange to Geneva was a great success; we have also hosted the Spanish exchange students and our students are in Spain.

Year 11 had a very successful, if poignant, visit to the Somme battlefields. All of these things have only been possible because of the dedication and care shown by all the staff at the High School, so I must end by thanking both the teaching and support staff for their commitment to the school and the students.  Finally, I would like to thank the Parents’ Association for helping us to finance the new chairs for the hall.  They are certainly more aesthetic and far more comfortable!

In September DEAL (Discover, Explore and Learn), the new bespoke Year 7 curriculum was introduced.

The Autumn Fayre this year organised by the Parents’ Association was a great success. The organisation of this event was superb. We were able to use the gym for the first time for the event as the Parents’ Association kindly invested in a tarpaulin for the school so that the floor would not get damaged. There were some lovely Christmas gifts to buy and the students excelled themselves in finding a variety of ways to raise money. Smoothies were a firm favourite as well as the food served by the dining hall staff. It is just a pity that more parents/carers did not support this event. It is important for all parents/carers to remember that any money raised goes directly into school to benefit all students. The Parents’ Association raised £1,500.

I would also like parents/carers to support our dining hall facilities, especially during the cold winter months by enabling your daughter/son to have her/his lunches using this facility. The catering staff have worked tirelessly to provide a varied menu to cater for all tastes within the new Healthy Schools regulations. Thank you to all those students who were positive about the service provided when we had a visitor in school from the Healthy Schools team who interviewed students, at random, about the provision of food.

The Languages Day was again a great event enjoyed by students from all years. The students’ performances in different languages were a great success. Congratulations to the Languages Faculty for organising such a successful event.

Mrs Sawicka had the privilege to attend the Gloucestershire Sports’ Awards 2008 event at Cheltenham racecourse. There were not many student nominees in any category. However, students from the High School for Girls were nominated in 3 categories. It was a very proud moment when Annelies Willerton was announced winner in both Rookie Coach of the Year and Junior Official of the Year and Kate Bace as Junior Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations go to both girls for their superb achievements. It is fantastic that girls not only excel academically but also in the sporting field.

Farewells to Staff


Mrs Christine MacLaren came to the High School for Girls in September 1983 (from Churchdown School where she was described as a ‘good and well-organised teacher’) to replace Mrs Banwell.  In September 1986 Mrs MacLaren became Head of Geography.  She has worked tirelessly to engage students in the subject, not only through her depth of knowledge, but also with her passion for the subject. Mrs MacLaren has been very giving of her time in taking part in ski trips and through organising field trips to places like Cardiff Bay, Iceland, Italy and Disneyland, Paris.  These trips have been a wonderful experience for students which I am certain that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Mrs MacLaren was also in her time an international lacrosse player. 

Mrs Jane Banwell started work at the High School for Girls in September 1980 as a Geography mistress.  She came to the High School from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls and stayed with us until April 1983 when she left to look after her elder son, Thomas.  Mrs Banwell then returned in 1986 to  the  part-time  position  of  Geography  teacher, becoming a full-time member of staff in 1996. For a time Mrs Banwell was also Assistant Examinations Officer.  In 2005 Mrs Banwell returned to part-time work again.   It’s true to say the Geography Department will no longer be the same!

Mrs Vickie Manning joined the staff initially in a part-time capacity at a time when the Design and Technology Department was growing rapidly, in September 1993.  Mrs Manning was part of the team that transformed this area into a high performing, dynamic department.  She is an energetic teacher who has a commitment to high standards and has a real passion for her subject.  

Mrs Gerda Iles What can I say?  She has worked tirelessly for the staff and students for 46 years as a cleaner and midday supervisor.  This is a fantastic commitment and she will be greatly missed.  I believe that she even once managed to catch a burglar!  I certainly will remember her for her kindness and good will.  Nothing has been too much trouble for her.  

Mrs Mavis Hill has worked for the school as a Catering Assistant since 1997 and has been employed directly by the school since 2007 when we took catering in-house.  She has always provided ‘service with a smile’ in the Dining Hall.

Miss Grace Ogilvie came to the school in April 2005 as a part-time teacher of History from Marling School in Stroud.  We have been very grateful to Miss Ogilvie in her versatility during her time here, as she has been not only a teacher but also a Learning Support Worker, Faculty Technician and the key member of staff concerned with reporting. Most people come to the High School to do one job, it is rare that we find someone who can be so flexible.  The school is also grateful to Miss Ogilvie for her work with the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.  The Award is highly successful at the High School at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and it is the dedication of staff like Miss Ogilvie that enables so many students to take part in the Award.

Mrs Jo Tetley joined the High School staff in June 2003 as a Student and Family Support Worker working one day a week.  She has provided an invaluable service to both the students and parents during her time here.  As a result of re-structuring we are now adopting a new pastoral structure and we have just appointed a Student Development Officer who will take over this role.  We are grateful for everything that Mrs Tetley has done for the students and parents/carers and wish her every success in her future work. 


Ms Annie Picthall joined the High School for Girls in September 2005 as KS4 Director from St Peter’s High School and Sixth Form College.  Ms Picthall has worked extremely well with the Assistant Head, Student Support, the Year 10 and 11 Form Tutors and with the Director of Post 16.  She has always had the students’ best interests at heart and has not been afraid to tackle even the most difficult problems.  Ms Picthall is a true professional who has deservedly been promoted to the post of Assistant Head at Hanley Castle School in Worcestershire.  We wish her well in her new role.

Pastures new

Mrs Rachel Smith was appointed to the post of Head of Music in September 2000.  In her time at the school Music has continued to develop.  She has been proactive in not only teaching GCSE and A Level Music, but has also enabled students to enjoy music both in lessons and in extracurricular activities.  The orchestra led by Mrs Smith certainly made Prizegiving a more prestigious occasion.

Mrs Mel Andrews  joined the school in January 2003 as a teacher of Textiles/Art.  During her time at the school Art Textiles has gone from strength to strength.  The work produced by the students has been of a very high standard indeed and has been displayed in the AS and A Level Art exhibitions for all to admire (some examples of which are on page 16 of this newsletter).  Mrs Andrews has certainly inspired the students within the creative subjects. Both Mrs Smith and Mrs Andrews leave the High School for Girls to look after their children.  They will be missed by staff and students alike.  We wish them well in their new roles.

Mr Ian Hunter came to the school as a newly qualified teacher in September 2004.  He came to the school with a wealth of experience as he had lived in Martinique, Cuba and Brazil.  He is an excellent linguist as he is not only able to speak French and Spanish but also Portuguese and Russian.  As a result of his expertise we have been able to offer the more unusual languages in Sixth Form enrichment and in extra-curricular clubs.  He became Head of French in January 2007 and has been proactive in using new technologies within the Modern Languages faculty.  Mr Hunter’s wanderlust has returned and he has recently accepted a job in Hong Kong.  He will be missed by both the students and staff alike.  

Miss Laura Pearcey and Miss Rosalind Camp both came to the High School for Girls on temporary, one year contracts in September 2008.  Both teachers have been hugely supportive of the English Department and the school.  We are delighted with the work that they have done over the last year.   Miss Camp has also been responsible for ensuring that all the reports go out on time. Miss Pearcey leaves to take up an English post at Bassaleg Comprehensive School, Newport, whilst Miss Camp has got a job as an English teacher at Farmor’s School in Fairford. 

Mrs Beth Wynn Williams began work at the High School in September 2008 as a part-time teacher within the Food Technology department.   Mrs Williams has been a very approachable and energetic teacher with a good sense of humour.  Her subject knowledge and enthusiasm for Food Technology have been ably passed on to our students. We are sorry that we cannot offer permanent contracts to such valuable staff and wish to thank the staff for their valuable contributions to the school.


Term 3 began with an absolutely fantastic concert at Gloucester Cathedral to celebrate the Centenary of the High School on the Denmark Road site.  It was quite overwhelming to see over 200 students from the school standing, in front of the audience, for “O Fortuna” from Carmina Burana at the beginning of the concert and for “Oh When the Saints” at the end.  The music department with their usual gusto provided the audience with a most amazing repertoire, no mean feat as we had only been back at school for a week after the two-week Christmas break.

The talent evident on this occasion was indeed awe-inspiring and I must thank the soloists: Sophie Coles who left in 2004; Elin White and Laura Wells in Year 13 and Lori Warsop and Jennifer Costin in Year 12.  The sound filled the cathedral.

Not many schools could boast of having such excellent musicians.

It would also be remiss of me not to thank the two Head Girls: Jennifer Crockford, nee Gardiner, Head Girl 1959 and Kathleen Bace, Head Girl 2009 for their most interesting reminiscences.

I am sure that all the youngsters taking part will not forget such a splendid occasion, and especially the excitement shown on the faces of the music staff: Mrs Day, Mrs Bowman, Mr Haynes and Ms Marshall when they stood in front of the performers and urged them to excel.  My grateful thanks go to them for putting on such a magnificent concert, which was certainly a fitting celebration of this key milestone in the school’s history.

Centenary Cake Competition

We were delighted to receive over 50 entries and they formed a wonderful display. The students had been extremely creative in their interpretation and we had trees/ ties/stripy blouses adorning the tops of the cakes.  The winners were as follows:

The cake competition held on the same day as the concert was a great success, it was amazing to see the various ideas for cakes based on the school theme.  The whole school enjoyed the cakes during the morning.  Thank you to all the girls who took part in the competition.

This term has been very busy in many other respects, especially with various AS and A2 examinations occurring.  It has also been a key time for coursework to be completed for GCSE.  I am reassured to learn that most students seem well on-task; the half-term break will be the time when this work will need to be completed.

I am very grateful to all staff who accompanied various trips over half-term.  Staff and students visited Queens College, Kalino, Uganda which was a unique experience.  It is the last year of our link with Queens College as no further money is available from the British Council to continue to develop the link.  Staff and students are also going skiing to Austria and visiting Berlin.  I hope that these trips are very successful and that the students thoroughly enjoy the experiences.

We welcomed back Mrs Heidi Clemmitt (KS3 Director and SENCO) from maternity leave and Mrs Penelope Maidment (SSCO Co-ordinator ).  Thanks go to Mrs Joanna Leggett and Mrs Jayne Biles for covering Mrs Clemmitt’s maternity leave. We were very lucky indeed to cover the maternity leave with two such experienced teachers. My thanks go to them for their support of the PE department and the school.

Chamber Concert at St John’s Church, Gloucester
On 25th February a group of forty students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 came together to put on a concert for St John’s Church. We were welcomed into a bright, warm and comfortable modern church and put on one of our Chamber Concerts to a packed audience. There were many items in the concert – from solo voices and instruments to student compositions. Some of the highlights were a Year 9 song compiled and performed by Erica Jane Alden, Rebecca Crump, Lucy Cooper and Jasmine Bryan, an accomplished piano performance of Ibert’s The Little White Donkey by Korinna Barnard, a beautifully atmospheric performance of Rodney-Bennett’s Four Calling Birds by
Francesca Lane, a theatrical interpretation of a song from Wicked by Erica-Jayne Alden and Emily Samways, accomplished flute solos by Emily Arnold and Emma Nield,  a stunning original composition from Chara Tan and an evocative and profound part  of Kol Nidrei by Naomi Soanes.

The the Head Girl, Head Boy and the two Deputies for the academic year 2009-2010. All will be taking up their posts in April 2009 after the Spring Break.

Thank you to Kate Bace (Head Girl 2008-2009), Sam Coles (Head Boy 2008-2009) and their Deputies, Rosie James and Nikki Singhera, for all their support and hard work during the past academic year. They have worked tirelessly to improve things and have certainly developed the School Council. I personally owe them a great debt of gratitude.

On Tuesday, 3rd February the whole of Year 7 took part in a very enjoyable and interesting technology day.   Everyone (with the exception of the people who were snowed in!) got a chance to participate in making foam finger puppets, look at dolls and toys from long ago with the people from Cheltenham Museum, make ‘Little Miss’ moving toys, watch the poor conditions of the people working in factories in China and finally make ballistas.  Making our finger puppets was a fun activity. First we picked its colour skin, then its tabard.

Finally we sewed around the edge to create a finger puppet.  The one made by Amy Charley was amazing and very well sewn.  Next we went to a room where Mrs Manning gave a talk about the appalling conditions that people in China work in for exceptionally long hours each day in a hot stuffy room with very poor seating arrangements.

After 2 years of fund-raising we have done it! We have managed to raise £5000 for the
borehole in Uganda.  Students and parents/carers may remember that our partner school, Queen’s Comprehensive College in Kaliro, Uganda, had no running water and the girls had to walk many miles each day to the river to get water. We as a school, decided in 2007 to fund-raise and give Queen’s School a borehole with the help and support of Water Aid.  Many students have washed cars, held cake sales, participated in a readathon, worn odd socks and have taken part in many other money-making activities – and it was all worth it as we have met our target.

We also had some help from Year 6 at Coney Hill Primary School who heard that we were about £200 short of our goal in January so decided to help us.  Through cake sales and sponsored walks they managed to raise over £900!  We thank them for the generous donation of £500 to our appeal (the rest is going to a wildlife charity).  So on Monday 23 March 2009 the email arrived to tell us that drilling for the borehole had begun at Queen’s College and we hope the work will be completed by Easter.

Well done everyone at HSFG and Coney Hill – when you clean your teeth next time using running water, think of the girls at Queen’s College and how much you have helped them - the water may not be running, but at least the tap will soon be outside their door. Thank you all very much.

March 5th was World Book Day and we marked this in school by holding quizzes for Year 7 and Year 8 students.  Teams were faced with some challenging questions about their school, history, films, and, of course, children’s literature.  Our Year 7s needed to know how many players there are on a Quidditch team, who wrote The Wind in the Willows, how many netball courts the school has and the identity of the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ in the Crimean War. Year 8s were tested on questions such as who won the first golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which classic story features Jo, Beth, Amy and Meg March, the name of the skeleton in the Science Department and the year of the sinking of the Titanic. After a very close contest, the Crème Eggheads of 7L achieved the top score for our Year 7s.

Well done to Charlotte Griffin, Gabby Rogers, Helen Green and Elly Swift. The curiously named Bible Bashers of 8D triumphed over some strong competition to win the Year 8 quiz, so well done, too, to Ellie Davies, Aimee Raistrick, Zoe Etherington and Jade Healey.  We were very grateful to Ruth Whyman and Miss Smith for being our quiz masters. They both did a splendid job!

And the answers? There are 7 players on a Quidditch team, Kenneth Grahame wrote The Wind in the Willows. there are 4 netball courts and Florence Nightingale was The Lady with the Lamp. Augustus Gloop won the first golden ticket, the March sisters are in Little Women, the skeleton is called George and the Titanic sank in 1912.

The High School for Girls Leavers’ Concert 2009

On Wednesday, 18th March we staged the annual Sixth Form Leavers’ Concert
to a packed school hall. This was the fantastic celebration of some highly accomplished and committed musicians, who have served the High School music loyally for many years.  It was a real privilege to hear the solos and ensembles that the girls had prepared, mostly under their own guidance. Tabi Leask performed a Schubert Impromptu with great panache and expression, followed immediately by an oboe trio (2 oboes Sophie Mullins and Laura Gerrish and cor anglais Naomi Barnes). The Cooper twins (Ellie and Abbie) gave a stylish, lively account of Mozart’s Papageno’s Aria, followed by a mellow performanceby Sophie Mullins of Cimarosa’s Oboe Concerto. Jo Barnard then delighted the audience with an evocative performance of Debussy’s first Arabesque.

The first half concluded with a bubbly performance of Hot Dixie by Katie Anderson, Amy Williams and Vicky Stephens and a fully choreographed version of Plink Plank Plonk by the strings.

In the second half we were treated to an atmospheric flute solo by Laura Gerrish, followed by Laura Wells’ stylish account of the Viola Concerto by Telemann, accompanied by the Baroque Group.

The concert was completed by Vicky Stephens’ jazz interpretation of Flight of the Bumble Bee, Bumble Boogie, the virtuoso emporium solo Song of the Brother played by Lori Warsop and finally Elin White’s assuredly romantic interpretation of the slow movement from Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto.

The Year 13 musicians have done so much for music on so many levels, and we wish them every success in their future careers, musical or otherwise. 

Mrs Sawicka visited Weihai in China

A number of headteachers and teachers from Gloucester City and Cheltenham were privileged to go to China to establish links with schools in Weihai. It was an amazing experience, as I had never before set foot in that part of the world. Our link school is Weihai No. 2 High School, whose principal is Mr Liu. It is a school of 4,500 students, 400+ staff and is spread over two campuses. The students are all 16-19 years of age and have had to take examinations to secure a place at the school. Students are taught in classes of 70 and are all enthusiastic about their learning. Achievement is high. The British Council, the Education department of Weihai and the Foreign Affairs department have matched us perfectly with the  School. 

Year 12 Physics Trip to Oxford -  31st of March

Y12 Physics students spent a day in Oxford, accompanied by Mr Hards.
The Department of Materials Science put on a circus of practical activities especially for our students. This meant that they were able to experience using top quality equipment under the supervision of some of the country’s best scientists. In the afternoon, students were given a tour of a college, and were able to ask a tutor general questions about University admissions.  They should now be able, confidently, to tackle any examination question on the properties of materials.

On 25 April 2009 it was the Old Girls AGM and lunch

It was an excellent occasion attended by 120 Old Girls. The number has grown year on year from my first AGM. The association put to the vote a change in their name and it was unanimously carried: it will be called the Former Students’ Association from now on so that the boys do not feel left out. I met not only many former students but also former staff, including two headteachers, Miss Elizabeth Miles and Miss Enid Castle. This was a real pleasure indeed, as inevitably their leadership has contributed to the success of the High School. I was also delighted to hear from a former student that she was willing to write the history of the last 25 years of the school, up to and including 2008. We must try to capture the history of this last quarter of a century from 1983.

Summer Show  - 9th & 10th July

Following the success of the past two summer productions in the school hall, we are locating to pastures new and using the Picturedrome (formally the New Olympus Theatre) in Gloucester.  Auditions took  place place and all parts were cast by the Easter Holiday.  All students who auditioned were part of the show.

When we first stepped into the Picturedrome Theatre in January 2009, we immediately felt the rush of excitement that only a real theatre can provide. Six months later and that same buzz has been fully appreciated by the whole cast, production team and audience – a total of some 900 people – who have all experienced first hand the same thrill of live theatre.

The whole moral of Bugsy has been fulfilled in our production – the team, cast and crew, have developed over several months, united in the single desire to create a thrilling, lively and entertaining production.  Friendships across year groups and ages, and between staff and students, have developed throughout the production, leading to an environment of mutual support and cooperation.

It has not always been easy! There have been tears of laughter, tears of sadness and frustration, endless worries and massive fulfilment! Through it all, a true team ethos developed as we have all supported one another through the high and low points!

Massive congratulations and thanks go to the fantastic cast superbly led by Sarah Webb (Bugsy Malone), Alice James (Blousey Brown), Sophie  McAdam (Fat Sam), Emily Green (Dandy Dan), Jo Marley (Tallulah) and Ellie Neate (Fizzy). Also to terrific cameo parts: Erica-Jane Alden, Ellie Pickett, Jennie Cosh and Josie Palmer.

The show would have been impossible without the inspiring direction of Ms Picthall and Mrs Day, the energetic backstage work of Mrs Dunnett, the administration and production help from Mrs Bowman and Mr Haynes, and the whole PE staff for various help from driving, to stage door and prompting.

Everyone’s already asking “What’s next year’s show going to be…..?”
What’s for sure, we shall certainly want to use the theatre again!

Farewells to Staff July 2009


Mr Malcolm Willis has worked as Deputy Head at the School since 1995.  He has been excellent in this role as he has a vast amount of knowledge about the school, from details about the computer network and how the boiler works, to the curriculum map of the school and all the timetabling requirements.  He has been an excellent critical friend to me personally and a reflective advisor.  I could not have wished for a more loyal colleague as my Deputy.  He has also been an excellent teacher of Chemistry and there are countless students who have indicated that he has sparked  creativity in them so  that they could achieve their goals  whether at Medical School, Veterinary School or indeed doing Chemistry at University.  Students in Mr Willis’ care have said that they have experienced a remarkable growth in confidence in both knowledge and skills in his lessons.  I am also grateful that Mr Willis will still continue teaching Chemistry, for another year.  We hope Mr Willis enjoys all the things he has planned during his retirement, especially the travel to far off- places and being able to do what he wants, when he wants.

Mrs Mary Hill started work on 1st January 1974 as Mistress in Charge of Biology from Selwyn School in Gloucester.  Mrs Hill left in May 1976 on maternity leave and returned in April 1982 as a part-time member of staff to the Biology department.  I have been reliably informed that she can name most plants from either their seeds or leaves.  Mrs Hill’s lessons are inspirational and I am aware of the fact that she is often judged to be an outstanding teacher.  Mrs Hill has had a tremendous impact on the students in her care and we all wish her a long, relaxing and energetic retirement.  

Mr Richard Beever joined the High School in September 2006 as a mature entry into the teaching profession after having a fulfilling career in the Electricity Supply Industry. He was inspired to teach because of the teachers he had at school and because of the years he spent training, both school leavers and graduates, within the industry. This role enabled Mr Beever to lead on several trips where young people did Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions.  We wish him all the very best for his new life in the South of England.  We will miss his fantastic cakes in the staff room.

Pastures New

Mrs Laura Parker joined the High School in September 2005 as a newly qualified teacher to teach History/Politics to A Level.  Mrs Parker has been an outstanding professional who has taken every opportunity to develop her knowledge and skills.  She took on the role of Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator in September 2007 and developed the provision for our gifted and talented students.  In April 2009 she took on the role of Team Leader for the DEAL.  She has been a huge driving force in the success of this curriculum and she has worked tirelessly to ensure that the students have an absolute fantastic experience.  She leaves to join Tadcaster Grammar School in Yorkshire, in a promoted post as Subject Leader: Skills for Life.  We wish her every success in her new job.

Mr James Playford came to the High School as Curriculum Director for Technology in September 2009 from The International School of Florence.  In his short time here he has worked on raising the profile of the Technology subjects.  Due to family circumstances, Mr Playford is moving to Pocklington School in Yorkshire where he will take up the position of Head of Technology.

Miss Georgina Ostridge  joined the High School in September 2009 as a Cover Supervisor from Brockworth Enterprise School, Gloucester.  Her former Head described Georgina as “reliable, great with the students and always willing to help”.  She has been excellent at her job and has enjoyed being in the classroom; consequently, she is now embarking on a PGCE course at the University of Gloucestershire, in order to teach History.  We wish to thank Georgina for all the work that she has done at the High School and wish her all the best for her training as a teacher.

Miss Hayley Staple began work at the school in September 2008, from Gloscol, as a Science Technician.  She has worked effectively and efficiently in the provision of support in lessons to all the Science teachers.  Scientists know that without the dedication and commitment of technicians many lessons and certainly experiments would not run smoothly. We wish her every success as she too embarks on her PGCE, to train as a Science Teacher.


In April, the School became a Foundation School.

Farewell to Staff July 2010


Ms Lynn Vale started at the High School in September 1993 as Head of English and became Head of the English Faculty in January 2001.  Ms Vale was an excellent Head of English and Head of the English Faculty as she had a meticulous approach to the work, but also took every opportunity to ensure that the students had a good experience.  Her love of English was very clear in her lessons which I have had the privilege to observe over the last few years.  Her lessons were extremely well planned and executed.  She believed in having a fast pace to lessons and ensuring that students learned something new from each lesson.  In January 2006 Ms Vale became an Acting Assistant Head and when I arrived in the school her role became permanent.  She was also given the responsibility of Strategic Lead for Learning and Teaching.  We hope that Ms Vale enjoys her retirement and finds time to do all the things she has been saving up to do.

Mr Keith Davies joined the teaching profession after working for 23 years as an engineer in the Electricity Supply Industry at various locations around the country.  He retrained as a teacher in 1997 and taught in Ipswich and Great Yarmouth.  He joined the High School for Girls in September 1999 as a Teacher of Science, and during his time here has worked as a Science, Physics and Mathematics teacher.  He has also been an examiner for Physics.  He has been a valued colleague within the Science department and the students have thoroughly enjoyed his lessons.  I know that Mr Davies is looking forward to cycling around various parts of the country and taking extended holidays.  We wish him all the very best in his retirement.

Mr Benjamin Clare-Gray joined the school in November 2010 to cover part of Mrs Kelly’s maternity leave.  He worked in the Religious Studies department and made a positive impact on the school.  He was particularly proactive in getting involved in school life, especially the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.  



In April, the School became an Academy and a charity.

Former Heads, Parents, Governors and Staff have pledged £430,000 for extension to dining room and new Drama studio over 5 years.

The new Performing Arts Block was completed in October and officially opened on Friday, 20th November 2015.

Redesign of new Art Textiles facilities.

New Psychology, Government and Politics and Sociology rooms, predominantly for Sixth Form teaching.


The first Year 10 Community Tea Party was held at the High School for Girls for residents of local care homes in March 2016.

80 primary students from Kingsholm Primary School were also entertained by Year 10 students at a community afternoon in July.

The Music Department achieved a ISM Gold Certificate for Music in 2016.

The new Dining Hall extension was finished just before Christmas 2016.  Staff, parents and students came into school on a Saturday in November for the “Dig In” for planting around the new dining hall



In January 2017 trousers become an option for the school uniform at the High School.                 

Funding was received from the Education Funding Agency for safeguarding the site.  New security locks will be fitted on all external doors and new gates will also have security features.  All staff and students will receive a security badge to access the site.

At Easter Mrs Sawicka announced that she would be retiring at the end of December 2017. 

In May former student, Kate Davies completed a book documenting the School’s history, from 1980 to 2007.  Named after the School’s motto ‘In Honour Preferring One Another,’  Kate’s book covers a period of significant uncertainty for the school, including a number of attempts to close it.

In July Miss Claire Giblin, Deputy Headteacher was announced by the Governors as the new Headteacher from January 2018.

In July Mr Paul Hards retired from his post of the head of the Science faculty.  Mr Hards had been at the High School since 1992.

In September the whole school photograph was taken.

On Wednesday 29 November Professor Robert Winston visited the school and gave two interesting talks to students, staff and parents.

Mrs Sawicka said a tearful goodbye to students, staff, parents and governors at the annual Christmas concert at Gloucester Cathedral.  This was followed by the staff Christmas pantomime, Alladin, where Mrs Sawicka played the Genie.



Miss Giblin took up her new role as Headteacher of the High School for Girls in January 2018.

At Easter Mrs Marilyn Burden, the longest serving member of staff retired from her position as Food Technology/Art Techician.


Showcase - 'My Fair Lady'

I am writing this following the amazing first night performance of the school production of ‘My Fair Lady’.  If you attended you will know I am writing with a grin on my face, ‘With a little bit of luck’, on replay in my brain and an overwhelming urge to speak in a cockney accent!
If you didn’t join us, you really must put all our show and event dates in your diaries as you are missing an utter treat!
Events and performances are some of my favourite times because they epitomise our school.  Students put themselves out there to perform for us and spend days and days rehearsing to make sure they offer their best.  Others design the posters, the sets, help back stage.  Then there are the staff who give so much time to make this magic happen, and finally we all come together and appreciate the magnificence of their collective endeavours.
Farewell to Staff - July 2018
At this time of year, it is inevitable that some staff will choose to move on from our school.  Mrs Rolfe, Cover Supervisor, has worked with us for part of this year, we thank her for bringing cover lessons to life, and her support within and beyond the classroom. Mr Wildman, Cover Supervisor, is also leaving us today. Mr Wildman has been with us for two years, as well as providing cover he has also given lots of his own time as a regular on Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, manning checkpoints and keeping the intrepid explorers on track.  He is leaving us to pursue a career related to his degree in Environmental Science.
Mr Hadfield, teacher of Latin, has supported students for many years, we thank him for enabling students past and present to achieve qualifications in this subject.
Now, every teacher is unique, but sometimes you meet those characters who epitomise the term. After 19 years with us Mrs Stuart is leaving today. Mrs Stuart has of course given her all in the classroom supporting students in lessons, but she has given so much more beyond that. Mrs Stuart gives generously of her time to students in one to one support, even coming in on her days off, and this week has worked backstage on the school production. She is also a huge support to the teachers in science, always there with a smile and a unique interpretation of life, the universe and everything. Mrs Stuart is forever young; she will give anything a go. She is a keen member of the staff triathlon team and believe me you cannot keep this woman off the dance floor at a school prom! Mrs Stuart, thank you for everything. We wish you every happiness in your new life in Devon.
And speaking of unique characters we are saying farewell to another genuine soul today. Mrs Rogers has been an amazing teacher of RS, History and PSCHE over her years with us. She has also been a fantastic Year Coordinator always taking the time to make sure those in her care are supported. Her call of ‘Hi hon, how are you?’ as you pass along the corridors will be missed by all. I think it is fair to say she brought us much laughter and her zest for life is contagious.
And now we come to two partners in crime who are leaving today. Mrs Drew and Mrs Lloyd-Owen.
Mrs Drew has brought life to Business lessons here at Denmark Road, ably supporting students to achieve their best. Mrs Drew is a ‘can do’ character, if she has a task under her care you know it will get completed to perfection, she is also a straight talker which I hugely appreciate, when she speaks up you know you need to listen. Not only has she taught Business but also Photography as part of the INVEST curriculum and previously led the Extended Project Qualification, developing the skills of students beyond the classroom. Mrs Drew leaves us to pursue her own business making unique hand-cranked knitted items and teaching others to be similarly creative. So when in Stroud on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month pop along to her stall and pick up some beautiful socks or a hot water bottle for the winter months to come.  Mrs Drew, thank you for your service, we wish you every success as a hand cranking entrepreneur!
Mrs Lloyd-Owen last week clocked up 25 years’ service to our school! A quarter of a century! Starting as teacher of Economics and Business her leadership skills were soon recognised and for 17 of the 25 years she has served under 4 Headteachers as part of the Senior Leadership Team.  Mrs Lloyd-Owen has been Head of Sixth Form, ran the Language College for us and most recently has led the pastoral team within the school. Mrs Lloyd-Owen is someone who is always there. You can count on her. She is someone who gets the work done. She has given so much of her time to making sure others are okay. Mrs Lloyd-Owen we wish you a happy and fulfilling retirement. We know you will continue to support others through voluntary work but do hope you will now take time to spoil yourself.



Monica Sims, (Denmark Road High School 1936-1943), has left the school £20,000 and the PTA a further £20,000. Monica passed away in November 2018 at the age of 93.
She forged pathways for women in the media and senior management. In a career at the BBC spanning 40 years she was changed the face of broadcasting for women and children as editor of Woman's Hour and later the head of children's television. She was the most senior woman in the BBC when she retired as controller of Radio 4 in 1983.

As we celebrate the achievements of women across the world today for International Women's Day, our Headteacher Claire Giblin takes a moment to remember one of our own.

In January 2019 it was announced that the school would be known as Denmark Road High School.


Mr Michael Haynes

Sadly our former colleague Mr Michael Haynes, died peacefully during half-term.  Mr Haynes had been suffering from MND and had spent the last couple of months in Leckhampton Hospice.  Staff and former students celebrated his life at a Memorial Service in Tuffley.

Mr Haynes was Head of Music at Denmark Road from 1995-2000 and returned as Joint Subject Leader for Music in 2006 until 2013.  He left to be Director of Academic Music at Kingswood School in Bath, and last year worked as Director of Academic Music at Malvern College.

Mr Haynes was an inspirational teacher, who helped countless young musicians.  He started the tradition of the Christmas Charity Concert in Gloucester Cathedral, which has raised tens of thousands of pounds over the years for various charities.  He worked with Mrs Bowman and Mrs Day to start the tradition of a summer showcase, highlighting performing arts talents.

The senior choir performed one of his carols ‘Sleep my little Jesus’ written for our Christmas Concert at the Cathedral, at his memorial service.


April 2019 - Five Generations at the same school!


In May 2019 the school celebrated its 110th birthday on the site at Denmark Road.


On 1st May students took part in a picnic in the school as unfortunately the weather was not suitable for an outside picnic.

Miss Giblin gave a birthday assembly in the gym where she spoke about the history of the school and introduced the new Senior Team.  Students and staff then sang Non Nobis.

Miss Giblin blew out the candles on the birthday cake and every student was presented with a Denmark Road birthday cupcake.

Farewells to staff - July 2019

In Languages, we bid farewell to two teachers. Mr Kombate, we thank you for joining the French department this year and enabling students to develop in Languages. We also bid farewell to Mrs Sollars. Mrs Sollars has worked at ours school for 18 years, I believe Mrs Sollars is the most bubbly person I have ever met, she effervesces with energy and enthusiasm, her smile, humour and immense talent as a teacher will be sorely missed.

Mr Waddington, teacher of Maths, is leaving to take up a post in an International School, thank you for enthusing students in their love of Maths, we wish you every success in your future.

Mrs Khalsi is leaving us as Finance Manager to take up post at another school.

From English we say goodbye to two members of staff, Miss Halliday and Mrs Murran, and also to teacher of RS and Sociology Mrs Kelly. We thank them for their service and wish them well for their futures. We also bid farewell to the dynamic and competitive Mrs Bird, Subject Leader of PE. Her energy and enthusiasm have been a great asset to the school, we thank her and wish her well in her new post at Rednock.

After 18 years of service, Mrs Bailey has decided to leave her teaching career and pursue her love of Design in a new adventure. Mrs Bailey has touched thousands of lives as a classroom teacher, tutor and previously as Head of Year. Mrs Bailey is a genuine soul who will do whatever, whenever for her students and also her colleagues. She has made us all laugh with her ability to lose pretty much everything on a daily basis! Mrs Bailey, we will miss your ‘Has anyone seen my keys?’ emails, we wish you well in your future adventure.

This year Mynd have won the House competition. Congratulations to all those who have contributed to the various events held through the year. Totals and running order of the Houses are as follows:

September 2019: New Sixth form block opened!

Denmark Road Sixth Form moved to a dedicated Sixth Form Centre in September 2019. Headteacher Claire Giblin, said “This is an exciting time at the school as we continue to pursue excellence in everything we do. We are thrilled to be moving into our new Sixth Form Centre this year. We are so excited that we will finally be giving our sixth form students the facilities they deserve.” The new accommodation will feature independent and group study spaces, expanded IT facilities, a sixth form library and an eagerly awaited café. “It is an exciting time for the Sixth Form with results continuing their upward trajectory and the new Sixth Form Centre providing the very best facilities and opportunities to our senior students whilst continuing our proud tradition of producing outstanding results and well-rounded individuals, fully prepared to take on the next stage of their lives.”

Denmark Road High School named as the Southwest School of the Year 2020 by the Sunday Times school guide Parent Power Recognising our increase in A Level and GCSE results

The award recognises the outstanding achievements of Denmark Road High School's students in their GCSE and A Level examinations this summer.  Headteacher Claire Giblin said "Denmark Road High School achieves excellence not by focussing on outcomes but through a holistic approach to education, by striving for 'Nothing Less than Positive Progress and Well-being for all'.  Our school ethos is underpinned by developing resilient lifelong learners and future leaders.  Our rapid improvement in results has reflected our shift in teaching philosophy to focus on metacognition and thinking hard approaches.  Denmark Road students are in charge of their learning, resilient to set backs and are sophisticated critical thinkers.  This gives them the platform for success inside, outside and beyond the classroom.  I thank them for their pursuance of personal and collective excellence."

Denmark Road High School has been named the Sunday Times Southwest State Secondary School of the Year in their Schools Guide, Parent Power.   The 2020 edition of Parent Power, widely regarded as the most authoritative survey of the country’s best schools, was published on 24th November 2019.   The award recognises the outstanding achievements of Denmark Road High School’s students in their GCSE and A Level examinations this summer.

The school launched their ‘Future Proof’ initiative last year.  Embedded throughout all seven years of the curriculum it focusses on developing learners for their next steps at university, apprenticeships and the world of work.  It includes bespoke programmes tailored to supporting those considering careers in medicine or law.  “The success of those students aspiring to those careers is hardly a surprise” Claire Giblin noted “when you see the hard work, support and opportunities that are put in place by our committed team.”

February 2020 : Another Celebration!

The Government published their KS4 Pupil Progress data for all schools.  These are used in their 'league tables' to allow parents to compare school performance. 

We are delighted that these results have placed us as the number one school in Gloucestershire for pupil progress.   Last year, our Year 11 students achieved a Progress 8 score of +0.90.  This means they achieved nearly one whole grade higher at Denmark Road than students of a similar ability nationally.  Denmark Road was ranked 89th in the country for Pupil Progress from 6274 schools.  The school progress data can be seen at the Compare School Performance government website:   

Our headteacher Claire Giblin acknowledged this sensational achievement:  "It is fantastic that the unbelievable work of our students, staff and school community have been recognised with these latest league tables.  We are rightly proud of our outstanding headline figures however, our school priority remains ‘positive progress and well-being for all’.  It is great to see this celebrated here.  We will never accept any of our students holding back in anything they do.  We are creating strong-minded independent young people at Denmark Road.  They make amongst the best progress academically in the country here while also developing as individuals and leaders who stand out in a crowd, know who they are and know who they will be.

This has already been a remarkable year.  Starting with record breaking results last summer across A Level and GCSE.  We moved into our new Sixth Form Centre this September and were announced in January as the Sunday Times Southwest State School of the Year.  Now we have been recognised as the top performing secondary school in Gloucestershire.  I am looking forward to the rest of the year already!"

Well done girls for becoming Young National Mathematician’s Award Finalists 2020. The team of 4 entered the regional stage of the competition in January at Gloucester Explore Learning centre. They showed exceptional teamwork, reasoning and communication skills to solve mathematical problems given to them. They are 1 of 5 teams selected for the national final held at the Natural History museum in London in 2 weeks time. An amazing achievement! #proudteachers #TeamMaths

Corona Virus Lockdown - March 2020

  • All schools shut for students from Friday 20 March 2020 except vulnerable students or those of key workers.  Remote learning in placed.
  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson started lockdown on the evening of 23rd March 2020
  • On the 5th April he was admitted to hospital after 10 days self isolating with the Corona Virus 
  • On the 6th April he is in intensive care with deteriorating symptoms 
  • The Queen addressed the nation at 8.00 pm on 5th April
  • Excel now known as NHS Nightingale and will be a hospital for up to 4,000 patients, most of whom are on ventilators. Similar venues being used in cities across the country. Opened by Prince Charles at 11am on 3rd April
  • Community support groups established, to support the vulnerable, elderly, immunocompromised and people in enforced isolation due to exposure, in their community
  • Petrol price close to home was £1.02
  • Self-distancing measures required - tape on the floors at grocery stores  and others to help distance shoppers  (2 metres) from each others.
  • Limited number of people inside stores, therefore, queues outside the store doors
  • Non-essential stores and businesses mandated closed; people who can work from home

  • Fines are established for breaking lockdown rules
  • Press conferences daily from the PM and other government officials. Daily updates on new cases, recoveries, and deaths.
  • Captain Tom Moore (who served in WW2) walked around his garden to raise money for the NHS just before his 100th birthday.  He started out wanting to raise £1000, he ended up raising just over £30,000,000.  On his 100th birthday the Queen made him an honorary Colonel and he had a spitfire fly-past.

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, having recovered from corona virus, on Sunday 10 May announced a new system tha will help the government decide how tough social-distancing measures should be:

  • Level five (red) - a "material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed" - extremely strict social distancing
  • Level four - a high or rising level of transmission - enforced social distancing
  • Level three - the virus is in general circulation - social distancing relaxed
  • Level two - the number of cases and transmission are low - minimal social distancing
  • Level one (green) - Covid-19 is no longer present in the UK - no social distancing.

As of 15 May we are on Level 4 with debates currently on-going as to whether schools will re-open after half-term on 1st June.

As of 1 June up to 6 people can meet up in an outside space or garden in the UK.  Barbecues are allowed but people from another household should not be going into other people's homes.

Some primary schools opened.

Outside markets, garden centres and garage show-rooms are now allowed to open.

From 15 June all other retail shops are allowed to open apart from hairdressers, beauticians, etc.
