Celebrating International Women's Day & World Book Day
A very busy day at the High School for Girls celebrating International Women's Day (and 100 years since women gained the right to vote) and World Book Day.
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Women won the right to vote in the UK 100 years ago...
But the landmark act only granted a very few of the UK's female population the right to cast a ballot.
Under the 1918 Representation of the People Act, women over the age of 30 who either owned land themselves or were married to men with property were given the right to vote.
The same act also dropped the voting age for men from 30 to 21.
But it was a start ....
World Book Day is a celebration! It's a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it's a celebration of reading. In fact, it's the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
