The British Biology Olympiad 2021

Just before the Easter holiday our Year 13 A-level Biology students took part in the British Biology Olympiad, a national on-line competition run by The Royal Society of Biology. The students were presented with topics and ideas which they were not familiar with, and so competed using their problem-solving skills and understanding of core biological principles.

We are thrilled to announce some fantastic results; one of our students, Beth Candish achieved a GOLD award, while Sophia Decatris, Hope Aquilina, Olivia Baxter and Hannah Harding achieved SILVER awards and Rebecca Brooks, Amy Griffin, Leo Elliott and Helen Davies achieved BRONZE awards. There were also many students who were ‘HIGHLY COMMENDED’ and ‘COMMENDED’ for their efforts in this extremely challenging national competition.

All of our participating students should be really proud of their achievements as they were competing against more than 10,000 students from over 800 schools worldwide; this includes all of the top independent, grammar and state schools in the UK.

Well done to all of our Year 13 biologists!

Later this term our Year 9 and 10 students will have an opportunity to take part in their own competition; the Biology Challenge, while our Year 12 students can try their hand at the ‘Intermediate Biology Olympiad. We are sure that they will also rise to the ‘challenge’ and prove to themselves how good they really are.

LRC News

This week we mark several festivals, such as National Garlic Day, the Queen’s birthday, Shakespeare’s birthday and Earth Day, so I’m highlighting an eclectic mix of titles available in the LRC!

These can all be borrowed via Click and Collect and of course count towards the DRHS Reading Marathon Challenge.

Our Battle of the Books House teams have all started on their reading now.  If you have copies of the titles they are reading that you no longer need and would be happy to donate them to the LRC, I would be really grateful.

The titles are as follows:

Kathryn Erskine: Mockingbird

David Almond: My name is Mina

Lewis Carroll: Alice in Wonderland

Catherine Storr: Marianne Dreams

Norton Juster: The Phantom Tollbooth

Malorie Blackman: Pig Heart Boy

Sarah Crossan: The Weight of Water

J K Rowling: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Michael Morpurgo: Private Peaceful

C S Lewis: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (Year 7)

Elizabeth Laird: Oranges in No Man’s Land (Year 8)

The PTA has kindly agreed to support the Carnegie Award Shadowing again this year and I am so grateful to them for this!  I am looking forward to our book order arriving, ready for the Year 9s and above to read!  If your son or daughter would be interested in participating, please have them contact me.  Our Year 9 Denner Book Award Team would also benefit from more readers to promote and review this year’s longlist — the titles they are reading appeared in the previous headteacher’s email.

Scholastic has just sent me their spring book leaflets which will be distributed to Years 7 and 8 students shortly. Parents and carers can order from the leaflet or online and books will be delivered free of charge to school.  The current deadline for orders is Friday May 14.   You can log in to the DRHS account here: https://shop.scholastic.co.uk/schools/denmark-road.  The LRC receives vouchers to the value of 20% of orders, and this helps to enrich the reading materials available to our students — thank you so much for your support.

Please remind your daughter or son that if they need some help with finding a new book to read or with researching information, please have them contact me, as I am always happy to help.

Parking

Please may I remind all parents and carers of the need to park both safely and considerately around the school site.  We are located in a busy residential area where a large number of our neighbours walk younger children to and from our surrounding primary schools.  Please ensure you do not park where road markings state you must not, on road junctions, or in front of private driveways.  Thank you for your consideration.

Registering for 2022 Entry (Current Year 5s)

The on-line registration window opens on Monday 17 May.  A link to the Registration will be available on our website under Admissions & Testing

No late registrations can be accepted after 12 noon on 30 June.

The Entrance Test is planned for Saturday 11th September 2021 (when your child has started Year 6), however this will be subject to any government restrictions/guidance at the time.

Lost Property

A large number of items are lost each week within school. Please encourage your daughter/son to look after their own property (and seek to locate it rather than just buy a new one!)
