English School Athletics Association Track and Field Cup 2017
Following the success of the Year 9 and 10 Athletics team at the county round of the Track and Field Cup, we qualified for the Regional A Final for the first time in the High School for Girls’ history.
On a warm and sunny Wednesday, 14th June we travelled to Millfield, ready to take part against some stiff competition. Each athlete takes part in both a track and field event, earning points for times and distances. This means you need to have real strength and depth in your team in order to succeed. We competed in the field events first with some good overall performances. However, it was on the track that we really excelled. Our sprinters and hurdlers sped down the track, holding their own against the opposition, whilst our middle distance competitors worked hard in the heat to run some great times. We finished with a flourish in the relay, with a winning time of 53.1 seconds, nearly 2 seconds ahead of the next quickest time. The girls showed fantastic team spirit and were a credit to the school. We had to wait a week for all of the other regional finals to be completed to see if our score of 381 was good enough for the top 12 scores and a place in the National Final. Sadly, we missed out, finishing in 17th place in the country. However, we are all incredibly proud of the performance of our athletes.
The members of the squad were:
Ellie Wheeler-Smith, Helena Shannon, Olivia Rook, Izzy Kilbride, Natalie Sodzi, Remi Shah-Thornley, Olivia Davis, Lucy Griffin, Harriet Sanderson, Rachel McKinlay and Lauren Garfield.
