Learning Resource Centre
Welcome to the Learning Resource Centre, a busy area at the heart of the School!
The Learning Resource Centre boasts a qualified and experienced librarian and a wealth of resources, including reference books, non-fiction, a wide selection of fiction, DVDs, CDs, daily newspapers, quiet areas to work - and much more besides.
The School is constantly updating the technology available: desktop and laptop computers, and iPads, which are bookable by classes throughout the day. Together staff and students are exploring the new opportunities which these new devices provide.
In order to support your learning, we carry a wide range of magazines and journals, from English Review to Good Food Magazine, New Scientist to Private Eye. Many journals also have fully searchable online sites. As you progress through the school, journal use becomes increasingly important in order to keep up-to-date in your subjects and to prepare you for university.
You have access to online research too. EBSCO Science, History and Reference Centres provide full text reference and journal articles online. MASSOLIT gives access to short lectures by academic experts on a variety of subjects. Essential Articles offers information on statistics and organisations plus selected articles on current issues. Your librarians are more than happy to show you how to make the most of these reliable sources of information.
Groups meet in the LRC throughout the week: Reading Clubs for Years 7 and 8; Chess Club; Origami Club; Oasis Club (boardgames). The Homework Club runs every evening until 5pm (4.30pm on Fridays). We organise a Carnegie Shadowing Group, reading the books shortlisted for the annual Carnegie Medal for children’s literature. The LRC hosts a Scholastic Book Fair, Book and Library Weeks, Dress Up as a Book Character days, author visits and book signings.
