Vision and Ethos

At DRHS, the PE Department create an enjoyable and challenging learning environment for all of our students. We guide them on their journey using a personalised and nurturing approach, where they feel happy and confident to participate in physical activity and sport.

Our enthusiasm and excellence inspire all students to enjoy a range of learning experiences, succeed gaining confidence, and be challenged to excel in a range of sporting activities, fulfilling their sporting ambition. Students will gain the confidence to perform and lead others, demonstrating our core values of Discover, Realise, Honour and Shape in everything they do.

Health and positive wellbeing are at the forefront of every lesson and we actively encourage students to embrace every opportunity provided to them, allowing them to become well-rounded individuals. We foster and nurture a love of sport and physical activity so that our students have the knowledge and tools to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

Co-Curricular Programme

The Physical Education Department offers a comprehensive and exciting co-curricular programme. Staff lead an array of recreational and competitive lunchtime and after school clubs, ranging from netball to gymnastics, from cricket to badminton, from football to trampolining. We are fortunate to have an array of professional coaches who assist the Department through running clubs, for example Ex-England handball player, Matt Durber, runs our handball club. Kelsey Jones from Gloucester Rugby has led a girls’ rugby club.

Student take great pride in representing the school in competitive inter-school matches (netball, hockey, football, badminton, cross country, athletics, cricket, rounders and tennis) against local comprehensive and private schools in the County. In Terms 1-4, hockey and netball are the major sports, along with cross country and badminton. Terms 5 and 6 have a very traditional focus with matches in rounders, cricket, tennis and athletics. We also enter the School Games Competitions and pride ourselves on offering competition for all abilities, with A-C matches in our fixture programme.

Sporting Success

In recent years we have had some outstanding sporting success in County, Regional and National level competitions. Our U16 netball team reached the Regional Finals in 2020 and our U15 cricket team came 3rd out of 790 teams in the Lady Taverners National School Indoor Cricket finals at Lords in 2019. A large number of our students go on to achieve representative honours in a wide variety of activities and we also have students who perform at national and inter-national level

Sixth-Form Sport

Sixth form sport has progressed in recent years. Students have a games afternoon each week, where they are keen to opt into a range of recreational and competitive activities. Staff tailor the programme to suit student demand and activities are often led by the students themselves. We have an established programme of competitive A and B fixtures against local schools in netball, football, rugby, basketball, and rounders. We enter the U19 County Netball Tournament, which enables students to compete at a high level.

The Department run several trips and events during the year. Students are invited to attend our annual PGL netball trip, where they compete in a netball tournament and engage in a variety of outdoor and adventurous activities. Sports Leaders

Students have the opportunity to complete the Sports Leaders course in Year 11 and 12 as part of their Discover options. The course develops important personal and social skills, and we guide students to become knowledgeable and confident leaders. They have the chance to implement their skills by leading sessions with some of our local primary schools, helping to inspire the next generation.

GCSE and A Level Physical Education

GCSE and A Level Physical Education is offered to all students as an option in Year 10 and Year 12 respectively. We study the AQA examination board for both courses, allowing a smooth transition between the two courses.
