Mathematics

Without mathematics,

there’s nothing you can do.

Everything around you is mathematics.

Everything around you is numbers.

Shakuntala Devi

A child prodigy, Shakuntala Devi was an Indian writer and mental calculator, called the ‘human computer’ and her talents are illustrated in the Guinness Book of World Records.

At Denmark Road High School we really do love Mathematics.

We are amazed by its beauty in art and nature; humbled by its strength and power in science and intrigued by its origins and development over the centuries.  We also think that it can be very funny too!

In KS3 and 4 students get their heads around complex algebra, explore how they can use number, look for patterns and sequences, solve geometrical problems and drill down to find the meaning behind data. We also make sure they can explain why the mathematics they are using works and that they can convince each other too.

The GCSE in mathematics and, for some further mathematics too, leads many students into our A level mathematics and further mathematics courses and supports their mathematics in other subjects including physics, chemistry and biology. In KS 5 students extend their knowledge and skills in core, with algebra, trigonometry and calculus and then apply these skills in mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics.

So, as you can imagine, we welcome those who love mathematics like we do, maybe even the next Shakuntala Devi. We will work alongside you to greatly expand your mathematical knowledge and skills as you explore the world of mathematics with us. We also welcome those who love a lot of things but possibly not mathematics. We will support and work with you to ensure you develop the mathematical skills and knowledge you need in life and, if you end up loving mathematics a bit more, that’s great too!
