Information for Parents
Welcome to the Denny family
I am delighted to welcome you to our special learning community.
My name is Ms Wickson and I am the Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for the Learning and Teaching at Denmark Road.
I also have the pleasure of being the Senior Member of staff who oversees the wellbeing and development of Years 7-9 with Miss Hodnett and her dedicated team.
We understand that the transition from primary to secondary school is an exciting and significant milestone in the life of your daughter and Year 7 is just the beginning. The Denny family will be here to support you and your daughter with the things she can do, wants to do, cannot do YET or what she is not even aware of YET!
Your daughter will be expected to master a variety of new experiences and changes, many of which demand skills and abilities that she has not had to use before.
To support your daughter so that she can fulfil her dreams and aspirations we have created our own Leaders of Learning Programme. The programme is designed to empower your daughter to understand how best to learn, so that she can become an active and effective learner not just in the classroom, but when making decisions and learning from experiences in every aspect of life. This programme will grow as she continues her journey with us at Denmark Road.
Denmark Road is a family: we offer our Leaders of Learning Programme to all. As parents and carers, there will be opportunities for you to attend information workshops, tutor days and excellence evenings - so you have the opportunity to not only hear about this innovative and exciting programme to support your daughter, but also to have the opportunity to reflect on your own cognitive learning strategies.
We do this because we want our students to have a lifelong love of learning so they can be the leaders of their own futures ~ #denmarkroad365.
In this booklet, you will see a number of frequently asked questions parents normally have during transition. Click on the links to see and hear the answers. There may be questions we have not answered. If this is the case, please email email@example.com and one of our Denny family will be in touch.
I look forward to meeting you all at the earliest opportunity and getting to know you during your daughter’s #denmarkroad365 journey.
We cannot wait to meet you
My name is Miss Hodnett and I have the pleasure of being your daughters Progress and Wellbeing Coordinator for the next two years of your journey with us at Denmark Road High School. I work with a fabulous team of Year 7 and 8 tutors who are here to listen and support you and your daughter throughout these important stages.
Students join us from a wide range of primary schools across the South West as well as our local communities of Gloucester and Cheltenham, therefore our #newtodenny Transition Programme is very important to us. Our transition aim is to ensure that every student feels happy, confident and supported during what can be a challenging time. Over the next few months and into the new academic year, there are many opportunities for you both to ease any concerns you may have.
Our Transition Programme is going to look a little different this year: we would normally welcome your daughters through our blue Denmark Road gates on Taster Day, but due to the current COVID19 situation, this may not be able to happen this year. However, our virtual #newtodenny Transition Programme, will ensure that you and your daughter have all the information required ready for the new academic year and I would like to outline it to you.
Firstly, we will be releasing a series of Welcome to Denny Challenges, which gives your daughter the opportunity to explore and connect with some of the fun, yet challenging activities our current Year 7 and 8 students have been enjoying during the school closure. We have also invited her to join our DRHS Reading Marathon, which our whole school community is taking part.
Via our website, you will also be introduced to different staff who are a key part of our Denny family and you and your daughters Denmark Road journey. This will enable you to see the friendly faces that your daughter can look out for when she arrives through our school gates. You will also be able to see a virtual tour of our school, which will help you to familiarise yourself with our buildings and classrooms.
I will also be sharing with you the #newtodenny student books reviews and challenge work in a weekly newsletter, so everyone who is #newtodenny can begin to bond and begin the journey to be the leader and learner that they want to be. #denmarkroad365
Next term, your daughter will be allocated a tutor group and one of our 5 Denny Houses: Barwell, Bearland, Hartland, Kyneburga or Mynd. The house system was introduced in 1923 to support girls to realise their membership of a community, and to give opportunities for responsibility and leadership to senior students. Our House system works the same today, as we empower students to be leaders of their learning and of their futures.
You will see a number of frequently asked questions. Click on the links to see and hear the answers. There may be questions not included and if this is the case, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and one of our Denny family will be in touch.
I look forward to working with you on our #newtodenny transition programme and look forward to meeting you soon.
