Geography

The word Geography derives from the Greek words ’ge’ (“the earth”) and ‘graphein’ (“to write” as in “to describe”)

Geography is at the heart of the world in which we live.  It studies the world, its people and the interactions between the two.  Wherever you live in the World, Geography will have a great influence on your life through physical, environmental, social and cultural developments and change.

The Geography department is a dynamic and successful partnership between teachers and students.  Our aim is to provide students with knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps and a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.  Fieldwork opportunities include visiting unique geographical landscapes, such as Iceland, allowing students to develop significant elements of the skills framework, with a strong emphasis on utilising maps and visual images as well as new technologies including Geographical Information Systems.  These transferable geographical skills help to equip our students for lifelong learning as responsible global citizens.

In the words of Michael Palin ‘Geography is a subject which holds the key to our future.'

Through the study of contemporary examples and the application of decision making skills, we create students who can present balanced viewpoints in a increasingly globalised world; we are preparing them for a changing world in which they will be the stewards.
