Future Proof

Future Proof is a significant part of our Year 12 experience.  Sixth Form is not just about getting great grades at A Level, it is about giving you the opportunity to develop wider skills and experiences that will assist you with your future careers and ambitions.

On this page you will get the opportunity to find out from some past and present students about their experience of aspects of the Future Proof programme that is on offer for Sixth Form students.

INVEST sessions appear on all Year 12 timetables for the whole of Thursday afternoon. There are a range of opportunities for students to choose from that encourage students to develop wider skills to support future choices, for example: Sports Leaders, Arts, Mandarin, Cooking on a Budget, Mindfulness and Yoga to name a few.   In addition to these activities students can opt to use Thursday afternoon INVEST to participate in regular work experience.  The large majority of Year 12 students use INVEST sessions to undertake regular weekly work experience with local employers.   Work experience is a key part of helping students make informed decisions about their future, and is increasingly an entry requirement of many university courses.  The Sixth Form has a directory of employers to help you find a placement, or you are welcome to find your own placement.  It is difficult to know what Work Experience opportunities will look like whilst businesses start to emerge from the recent lockdown and social distancing is in place. This year we are not expecting to offer weekly work experience until Jan 2021. Until then a carousel of activities will be provided both on and off site to help develop skills and interests on a Thursday afternoon.  The Sixth Form Team are busy planning and preparing this new programme for INVEST, and will be publishing further details in thenear future. All Year 12 also complete a week of work experience in June following their summer assessments.

Students benefit from the wide range of extra-curricular options that are available from MedSoc to Glee Choir, from Football to Debating and LGBT+ society.  There are opportunities to take part in National competitions such as the “Brain Bee” and English Speaking Union Debating competitions.  Students are actively encouraged to establish their own clubs and societies, as this presents an opportunity to develop leadership skills, and also to help form great relationships with students of all ages.  Duke of Edinburgh Award Silver and Gold are also available in the Sixth Form.

There are many opportunities for students to take on Leadership roles within the Sixth Form.  We have a very energetic Senior Student Team that lead on student voice and other important aspects of school life.  Our House system is also ably led by a dedicated team of House Officials.  There are also opportunities to train to be Peer Supporters.  This team works with our younger students to help support them with anything they maybe finding difficult within school.

This is just a summary of the exciting opportunities that we have on offer!

Natasha - Work Experience Review

I completed my work experience at Tallis Amos Group, which is a specialist wholesaler of John Deere tractors and turf machinery.

On placement I shadowed members of the office team, and I learned a wide range of skills such as basic accountancy, sales techniques and I was able to develop an outgoing and sociable set of communication skills when interacting with customers.

I thoroughly enjoyed working at TAG and believe it has given me a clearer idea of what career path I would like to follow in the future.  This is especially important to me because it has allowed me to create a connection with the brand John Deere, with whom I would like to spend my placement year of university working for.

My work experience also led to TAG offering me a full time summer job after Year 12, which I have been able to return to again after Year 13.
