Communication and Interaction (C+I) Needs

All young people need to be able to understand and use language effectively to access the curriculum and communicate with others. Young people's linguistic competence supports their learning as well as their communication skills.

Many young people have difficulty in understanding others and in expressing themselves.

They may have difficulty with:

  • fluency of speech
  • forming sounds and words
  • expressing their thoughts and ideas clearly
  • social interaction
  • attention and listening
  • social understanding
  • flexibility in thought and behaviour.

Stages of Support

Description

1

Teachers put provision in place as recommended by the SENDCo and monitor effectiveness

2

If further support is needed, in consultation with parents/carers the SENDCO will complete a referral form to the Advisory Teaching Service

3

The Advisory Teacher visits the school, observes the student and consults with student, staff and parents where appropriate.  Recommendations are received and implemented

4

In conjunction with the Advisory Teacher, student, parents and SENDCo the graduated approach is followed.  The Advisory Teacher works with parents to ensure provision is also in place at home.
