Photography Competition

Here are the DRHS student submissions for the Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year competition - unfortunately the competition was in April and was cancelled, however DRHS students have again, impressed us with their skilful and original photography!

Mia aiming for British Championships

Massive congratulations to Mia Wilson in 9M.  She has been asked to undertake extra seven hours of gymnastics training every Tuesday in Bristol.  This is to enable her to achieve the qualifying score for the Women’s Artistic British Championships next year. Mia is currently competing for the South West regional team and competes individually and in teams in National competitions.

Mia manages to keep up with her studies whilst training so hard. Well done Mia, a fantastic achievement.

Mr Bazac

Running Bingo challenge

This is a non-compulsory activity, but we hope lots of the students will embrace the challenge. Parents/carers are of course welcome to join in too! Students can record their progress on the excel doc that was sent to them last week. We hope you enjoy it!

(I will add the sheets to the website with the newsletter).

LAMDA Result

A huge well done to Tilly Hall who travelled to LAMDA's HQ in London to take her most recent exam a few weeks ago. Results are now in and she has passed as follows:

Grade 4 Verse and Prose Speaking - Distinction. (85%)

Well done Tilly!

News from the LRC

Book Returns

It’s unnaturally quiet in the LRC these days, with just the persistent beep of the “zapper” as seemingly endless numbers of books, textbooks and DVDs return to the roost.  It has truly been a mammoth year for loans.

Please encourage your daughter or son to return or renew any books they still have on loan from last year, including textbooks, so that their accounts are up to date.

A week’s worth of book returns in 72 hours quarantine -September 2020

Book Reviews

We ended the school holidays with 1495 reviews having been posted for the Denmark Road Reading Marathon.  Several students achieved their intended target of 26 reviews – and some went well beyond!  We are continuing the Marathon this year – I’m really looking forward to seeing a wide and diverse range of books in all formats (print, audio and e-book) appearing on there. Students can consult the Marathon reading list from last school year or contact me and I’ll be happy to help them find something interesting to read.  We already have over 50 reviews posted for this year – thanks go to Mrs Shaw as always for her enthusiasm about this project and her technical expertise organising Google Forms, spreadsheets and emailing totals and links to us all.

Scholastic Book Club

The LRC runs a Scholastic Book Club, which offers books at discounted prices to parents and carers.  The LRC benefits in that we receive credit to the value of 20% of orders which we can spend with Scholastic on resources for our students.  Last year your Book Club orders earned us almost £60 of rewards which will be invested in new reading resources for our students – thank you.  The current Book Club order deadline is 30 September 2020.  Normally we would receive paper leaflets with details of the books on offer, however this year I understand that everything is going online.  You can log in to the DRHS account here: https://shop.scholastic.co.uk/schools/denmark-road.  Books will be delivered to DRHS.  At present I do not know whether we will be able to run a physical Book Fair, as we traditionally do each March, but I will keep you informed. Thank you so much for your support.

If your son or daughter has any questions about authors, books, genres or how to find information, they can always email me or call in to the LRC and I will help them find what they need.  Let’s make this a fantastic reading year at DRHS!
