Welcome to the latest edition of Our School, Our Week. As I mentioned last Friday this has been an exciting week with the announcement of Denmark Road being names “Sunday Times Southwest State School of the Year”. A wonderful recognition of what an amazing place our school is.
It was also brilliant to see so many parents at our Securing Excellence Evening on Thursday. These are key events in our calendar with supporting our students to achieve positive progress in their examinations.

Year 7 and 8 News
Congratulations to the Denmark Road Chess Team. They competed in the U19 Regional National Chess Tournament last week at Bristol Grammar School. They finished a very respectable 8th out of 19 teams – the top ranked state school in the south-west. Even better, the top eight teams qualified for the National Finals later this year. A fantastic result for their first tournament as a school team.
The students who comprised the team were:
Naila Hidouci Year 7
Zoha Ashraf Year 7
Parinidi Krupal Year 7
Jaime Ashworth Year 8
Imogen Winters Year 8
Bethany Mawby Year 8
Year 7 and 8 Christmas Disco
The Christmas Disco for Years 7 and 8 is at STRS on Friday 6th December. Tickets are £4 and on sale from Miss Hodnett. Students will need a disco letter slip signed by their parent to buy a ticket.
Year 8 Geography
We are pleased to share the six winning entries from our Year 8 Antarctica Flag competition. The winning submissions have been sent to the Polar Network who will share them with Antarctic explorers. We are looking foward to receiving photos of our flags when they reach their final destination.
Year 9 and 10 News
Year 9
Well done to Abigail Rossi. She raised £130 for Children-in-Need by selling iron-on patches and pin badges.
Year 9 Trip to Disneyland Paris
Please ensure that passport numbers have been entered on ParentPay and they have sufficient validity left.
Year 10
Well done to Francesca Sherborne who was recently graded and achieved her Black Belt in Tai Kwon Do. This is the result of eight years hard work and dedication. The examination lasted five hours and she has trained three times a week for the last year in preparation.
Year 11 News
Congratulations to Betsy Mangan and Olivia Brock who have been selected to represent the U17 County Cricket Team. We look forward to hearing their progress.
Here are a selection of our hard working Year 11 students attending afterschool Art last week.
The Year 11 Revision Evening, held last week, welcomed over 100 parents. The evening focussed on approaches parents can take to help prepare their children for their GCSE examinations. Please find here the PowerPoint used during the evening. On the final two slides, you will find useful links for both you and your daughter to use to aid revision, as well as a recommended book written for students.
